Birth Order and Personality
For more than a century, many people have believed that the order in which children are born shapes their personalities. The idea was made popular in the early twentieth century by the psychologist Alfred Adler, who argued that a child's position in the family created lasting psychological pressures. According to this popular view, firstborn children tend to be responsible and eager to lead, having once enjoyed their parents' undivided attention before younger siblings arrived. Middle children, caught between older and younger brothers and sisters, learn to negotiate and compromise, while the youngest are said to be more relaxed, sociable, and rebellious. The theory has been repeated so often in magazines and popular books that many people now treat it as established fact.
