Rivers Under the City
As towns grew into busy cities long ago, many small rivers and streams were seen as a problem rather than a pleasure. City leaders often worried that open water carried bad smells, spread disease, and got in the way of new construction. To make room for roads and buildings, people buried these waterways in pipes underground and paved over them. In city after city, streams that had once flowed freely through fields and villages disappeared from view within a single generation. Over the following decades, the neighborhoods above them filled with houses, shops, and traffic, and old maps no longer showed any sign of the water below.
