The Flynn Effect

Throughout the twentieth century, something curious happened to the results of intelligence tests. In country after country, and across tests of many different designs, the average score kept rising, generation after generation. The change was neither small nor temporary: if people today took a test that had been designed decades ago, they would score far higher than the people for whom it was originally written, often by an amount large enough to shift someone from an ordinary to an exceptional band. James Flynn, a researcher working in New Zealand, was among the first to gather results from dozens of nations and to show that the pattern was remarkably consistent, appearing in rich and poor societies alike and refusing to fade away. This steady rise, later named the Flynn effect after the scholar who studied it most closely, forced psychologists to ask what could possibly be driving it.
