The Paradox of Choice
Common sense tells us that having more choices must always be a good thing. Economists have long assumed that a wider range of options can only benefit the consumer, since anyone who prefers the original few can simply ignore the rest and lose nothing by their presence. If a shop offers thirty kinds of jam instead of six, surely every customer is more likely to find one that suits them perfectly, and no one is forced to buy something they dislike. This comfortable belief shapes the way modern supermarkets, restaurants, and websites are designed, all of them competing to present the widest possible selection in order to attract our attention and win our custom. Shoppers, too, often say that they prefer stores with a great deal of variety on the shelves. Yet a series of well-known experiments in psychology suggests that the relationship between choice and satisfaction is far more complicated than it first appears. The Moon may look fixed in the night sky, but it is very slowly moving away from the Earth. Each year, the distance between them grows by about three and a half centimetres, roughly the rate at which human fingernails grow. This tiny change is far too small to notice with the eye, yet scientists can measure it with remarkable precision.
