The Mere Exposure Effect

Why do we sometimes come to love a song that we disliked when we first heard it, or feel warmly toward a face simply because we have seen it many times? Psychologists have a name for this curious pattern: the mere exposure effect. The phenomenon was studied in detail in the 1960s by the researcher Robert Zajonc, who noticed that familiarity, rather than any special quality of the object itself, seemed to shape people's preferences. In experiment after experiment, he and others have found that, all else being equal, people tend to prefer things that are familiar to them. The pattern has been demonstrated with photographs of strangers, invented nonsense words, short pieces of music, and even foreign symbols that carry no meaning at all for the person looking at them. When people imagine a desert, they usually picture blazing sunshine and unbearable heat. This picture is true enough during the day, when the surface of a sandy desert can grow hot enough to burn bare skin. What surprises many people, however, is what happens after sunset. As soon as the sun goes down, the temperature can plunge, and in some deserts the night air becomes cold enough to freeze water.
