The Dunning-Kruger Effect
It might seem obvious that people who are bad at something would immediately realise it. In reality, psychologists who study human judgement have repeatedly found that the opposite is often true. In a series of well-known experiments carried out in the 1990s, David Dunning and Justin Kruger asked volunteers to complete tests of grammar, logic, and humour, and then to estimate how well they had performed compared with others. The results were striking. Those who had scored lowest tended to be among the most confident, cheerfully rating themselves as well above average, while many of the strongest performers were far more modest about their own work. When people know very little about a subject, it seems, they frequently overestimate their own ability, and sometimes they do so wildly. This tendency appears across many different skills, from driving a car to playing chess.
