The Framing Effect

Imagine a doctor telling a patient about an operation. In one case, the doctor says that ninety out of a hundred patients survive it; in another, that ten out of a hundred die. The two statements describe exactly the same facts, and a moment's arithmetic confirms that a ninety percent survival rate and a ten percent death rate are one and the same. Yet careful studies of both patients and experienced doctors show that people are far more willing to accept the operation when it is described in terms of survival, and noticeably more reluctant when the identical odds are expressed in terms of death. For a long time, the popular explanation was that yawning takes in extra oxygen when we are tired or bored and our breathing has slowed. This idea seems reasonable, but when researchers tested it by giving people more or less oxygen to breathe, it made no difference to how often they yawned. The old explanation, it appears, is probably wrong. …(続く)
