The Spacing Effect

When students have a great deal of material to learn, many choose to study it all in one long session just before the test, a method often called 'cramming.' It feels efficient, and by concentrating everything into a single burst of effort it does seem to make the most of limited time. For a day or two it may even appear to work, since the facts are still fresh and easily brought to mind. Teachers and students alike have noticed this pattern for generations, and it is easy to see why the habit remains so common in schools and universities around the world. Yet more than a century of careful research in psychology points to a surprising conclusion that runs against our everyday intuition.
