The Sunk Cost Fallacy

Imagine that you have paid for a ticket to an outdoor concert, only for the evening to turn cold and wet. You no longer want to go, yet you feel that, having already spent the money, you ought to attend anyway. This feeling is extremely common, and psychologists call the mistake behind it the sunk cost fallacy. The term itself was borrowed from the world of economics, where a 'sunk cost' is contrasted with the future costs that a decision can still affect. Everyday life is full of smaller versions of the same trap: we finish a dull book simply because we have read half of it, sit through a disappointing film to the very end, or keep eating a meal we no longer enjoy because we have paid for it. When the pilot wants to fly, they light the burner, which sends a roaring flame up into the open mouth of the balloon and heats the air trapped inside. As this air grows hot, the whole balloon begins to rise gently into the sky. The reason lies in one simple fact about air: hot air is lighter than cold air. …(続く)

No.25What makes a hot-air balloon rise?

1The air inside is heated and becomes lighter than the outside air.2A hidden engine quietly pushes it upward.3A strong wind lifts it up from below.4The burner fills it with a special light gas.

解説:第1段落。内部の空気を熱して外気より軽くすることで気球は上昇する。
