However, critics say …

In recent years, many companies have allowed their employees to work from home instead of coming to an office every day. This way of working, often called remote work, has become far more common, and it has changed the way many people think about their jobs.

Supporters point to several benefits. Workers save the time and money they once spent traveling to and from the office, and many can use those extra hours for rest or for their families. People are also free to work from almost anywhere, and some say that they concentrate better without the noise and interruptions of a busy office.

However, remote work also brings problems. When employees are not in the same place, it can be harder for a team to share ideas and work together smoothly. Some workers feel lonely, and others find it difficult to separate their jobs from their private lives, staying at their computers long after the workday should have ended.

Nowadays, many companies let employees work from home. Supporters say workers save time and money on commuting, can work almost anywhere, and may concentrate better without office distractions. However, critics say teams find it harder to work together, and some workers feel lonely or cannot separate work from their private lives.

Many supermarkets today have replaced some of their human cashiers with self-checkout machines. At these machines, customers scan and pay for their own goods without the help of a worker. In a growing number of stores, using them has become a normal part of shopping.

Supporters point to several benefits. When many machines are open, customers who have only a few items can often pay more quickly and avoid long lines. Stores are also able to serve more shoppers without hiring as many cashiers, which helps them to keep their costs down.

There are problems, however. Older shoppers and others who are not comfortable with technology may find the machines confusing, and a single mistake can force them to wait for a staff member anyway. Some people also worry that, as more machines are installed, fewer jobs will be left for cashiers.

Nowadays, more supermarkets use self-checkout machines, so customers pay by themselves. Supporters say customers with few items pay faster, and stores keep costs down by hiring fewer cashiers. However, critics say people uncomfortable with technology find the machines confusing, and fewer jobs may be left for cashiers.

Many people around the world keep pets such as dogs, cats, and birds in their homes. For a large number of families, an animal is not just a companion but almost a member of the family. Recently, researchers have begun to study more carefully how keeping a pet affects the people who own one.

There are several clear benefits. Playing with an animal can help people relax and feel less lonely, and studies suggest that pet owners often feel happier and calmer. Dogs, in particular, need daily walks, so their owners get regular exercise and sometimes meet other people while they are out.

However, keeping a pet also has its difficulties. Animals need food, space, and regular visits to the vet, and all of these things cost money. Pets must also be cared for every single day, which can be hard for people who are busy or who want to travel, since someone must always look after the animal.
